Parents Disciple Your Children

The Eclectic Web

We noticed several articles in recent days relating to parenting, communicating faith to children, the faith (or lack of it) of young people raised in Christian homes. We are planning for some articles on the subject next week, but for now we’d like to point you to some of the articles that prompt our thinking in this area.

Parents, Require Obedience of Your Children – by John Piper

Yes, independent Baptists often have points of disagreement with Piper (and the FBFI issued a position statement about him some years back), but this article is really worthy of your attention. Christian parents, have the courage to require obedience of your children (which is more than simply disciplining them).

More parenting links after the jump.

Baptist Press -Young adults who abandon faith may have ‘lukewarm’ upbringing

Reporting on a study by Focus on the Family, BP says “The idea that young adults are abandoning their faith in droves may be widely accepted but isn’t fully accurate.”

The Focus on the Family study (This is a pdf file – seems kind of large, may take a while to download, but interesting content once you get to it.)

Counseling
NANC/ACBC Update – a few weeks ago we linked to articles where Donn Arms expressed concerns about changes in the Biblical counseling organization, NANC (soon to be known as ACBC). He publishes more information here and retracts some of his earlier concerns.

History
Book Examines How Jews of Denmark Were Saved from the Holocaust

For history buffs, a review of what looks to be a very interesting book about Denmark, the resistance, and Danish protection of Jews.

Denmark was the only European country to save almost all of its Jewish residents from the Holocaust. After being tipped off about imminent roundups by prominent Nazis, resisters evacuated the country’s 7,000 Jews to Sweden by boat.

Theology
The Strange Fire conference continues to generate a lot of interest. If you haven’t listened to any of the sessions, you can find the audio here.

Canada
Near and dear to the heart of your editor, an astute religion columnist from the Vancouver Sun makes some observations on the state of Christianity in British Columbia: B.C. breaks records when it comes to religion and the lack thereof.
