Teach Me Thy Way

George Stiekes

Teach me Thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. Psalm 27:11

Teach Me Thy Way, O LORD is one of my favorite songs. God’s Word reveals God’s way for our lives. When David was King in Israel, it was the Word of God that directed his kingly decisions.

Responses to the devotionals on the Will of God have been incredible. (See here for links to previous posts.) We must recognize that what we think about will determine what we do. If we truly want the will of God to be the controlling force in our lives, we must saturate our minds with the Word of God.

It was the Word of God that produced the foundation for our own nation. Our early leaders, and the signers of our constitution respected the counsel of God’s Holy Word and we are drifting far from that foundation today. Now we have leaders who think they are adequate on their own to make history-changing decisions that will influence our nation for years to dome.

The teaching and guidance given in the Word of God is also important in our individual lives directing our own life choices. C. S. Lewis reminded us that we are becoming now what we will be in eternity, something glorious or something hideous. God’s Word gives us principles for conduct in our individual lives and in our families and reveals how we can use every moment and every opportunity for His glory.

Our constant prayer must be,

  • Teach me Thy Way, O Lord and Order my steps in Thy Word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me (Psalm 119:33).
  • Thou wilt show me the path of life: in Thy presence is fullness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore (Psalm 16:11).
  • The meek will He guide in judgment: and the meek will He teach His way” (Psalm 25:9).
  • I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with Mine eye” (Psalm 32:8).
  • Order my steps in Thy Word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me (Psalm 119:133).

Our every daily task is to be done to the glory of God, but we will not accomplish that goal unless our lives are totally directed by God’s Word. Our daily walk with Christ prepares us for eternity. If we daily allow God’s Word to so direct our lives, when the trials and troubles come along the way, we will not be defeated and we will not lose the joy of the Lord.

We must be willing to be taught and willing to follow where He leads us, which is to move in the direction He is going. That is why it is so important to know His Word.

Pray: Help me to walk aright, more by faith, less by sight; lead me with heavenly light – teach me Thy Way!
